Overall Pride of Gedling Award – Florence Orchard
In her capacity as the elected member for Gedling on the Nottinghamshire County Youth Parliament, for over six years from the age of 13 Florence has represented the voice of young people – not only in Gedling, but also at County and National Level; speaking at the despatch box in Parliament about the democratic rights and other concerns of young people and participating in national leadership initiatives and campaigns.
Her exceptional leadership skills ensured that Gedling Young People represented over a quarter of the County wide outturn in this year’s ‘Make Your Mark’ Campaign, which determines the top ten priorities for the national youth parliament to address during their term of office. Thanks in no small measure to this exceptional young person, Gedling Youth Council is widely acknowledged as being the most engaged and dynamic in the County.
2019 Winners
Lifetime Achievement Award – Alan Marwood
At some point over the past 49 years, this Special Constable has patrolled every division and boundary area across Nottinghamshire and in that time, has seen everything you could imagine, in some cases, things you couldn’t imagine.
Just two years into his career, he was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for assisting in the arrest of armed robbers who shot at him and another Special Constable colleague following a foot pursuit near to Sneinton. If that wasn’t enough he is also a state registered paramedic and advanced driver trainer for East Midlands Ambulance Service
He’s personally been responsible for saving the lives of six people, including a two-year-old boy who was choking near to where he was on patrol. He’s also arrested two murderers in his time as one of the longest serving Special Constables in Nottinghamshire.
2019 Winners
Dylan Barker Young Person Award – Oliver Lee
Oliver helped save a local woman’s life when he stepped in to help her after a fall. He was on his way home from school when he found the elderly woman in her garden in Carlton, called an ambulance and administered first aid.
Paramedics called to the scene told Oliver the woman’s pulse was so low that timing was crucial and Oliver’s help may well have saved her life.
He used his training to put the lady in the recovery position, talking to her and helping stem the bleed from her head with his own hand. A true hero.
Business in the Community Award – Piginns Cafe
Not only do they do an incredible breakfast, the staff at Piginns are also pillars of their community.
Maria and her team have raised money for several causes including Age UK but their recent campaign to install a community bench in the sensory garden on Carlton Hill in the memory of local characters who sadly passed away was something very special.
Community Servant Award – Harvey Stevens
Sport is often a great way for young people to learn the vital life skills they need and thanks to Harvey, students at Carlton le Willows are nurturing their talents playing table tennis.
Thanks to Harvey’s commitment and vision the Academy is now home to a national standard table tennis centre accessed by students, the local community and aspiring table tennis players from further afield.
Good Neighbour Award – Ann Haslam
Having a friendly neighbour makes living where you live a much nicer experience and Ann is a very special neighbour! If she’s not keeping the street tidy, she is helping the sick, visiting them in hospital and she has supported her neighbours through the toughest of times.
She has been described as a rock to her neighbours in Netherfield and someone who goes way beyond the extra mile.
Outstanding Community Project – We R Here
This small team, based right here in Arnot Hill Park, have supported over 800 people in the last year who have suffered domestic abuse, trauma and crisis.
All this work is done through the dedication of the small team of 8 people, including volunteers led by Hilary Brown. The team make sure every person is welcomed into the service and treated with respect and helped both emotionally and practically when needed.
Volunteer Award – Sarah Benedek
If you’ve visited the Gedling Country Park and taken your children around the nature trail, you can thank Sarah, she worked incredibly hard to get the funding to make it happen with the support of the Friends of Gedling Country Park group.
Sarah has also helped raise an incredible £6,000 for the children’s ward at QMC hospital and, this year, she raised £7,000 for her local church, The Good Shepherd to literally keep a roof over its head.
